Music

I can describe the characteristics of music in songs from the past and present and from different genres.

Over the past 9 weeks I have been learning to describe the characteristics of music from songs of various times and genres.

I can name and define these characteristics of music… (list them below and explain what they are)

1. Melody- A line of notes to put to make a tune. The antecedent comes first and the consequent comes after that. It is also the part that gets stuck in your head. The melody is in the chorus because that is the part of the song that gets stuck in your head.
2.Harmony- When lots of notes are put together to make a sound.  There is minor harmony that is a sad song and major is a happy song.
3.Rhythm- A repeated sounds that change speed.
4.Timbre- Special sound that makes the voice/ instrument sound unique.
5.Form- The layout and structure of the music. It is broken into parts, they are chorus, verses and a bridge.

What did you find most interesting during this topic.
I found Timbre interesting because I never knew what it was and now I do.

Which characteristic do you find yourself picking up on when listening to your own music now?
When I listen to my own music I often hear melody because it is always the mart that gets stuck in my head.

Here is an example of my learning-

Water,water please fall down book

In this project I was working with Alyssa and we decided to create a online children's book.
Here is a link what we made.

In this project we decided that our success criteria were: (list the criteria you created on slide 7)
Steps to Complete the task:
  1. Decided on the story
  2. Draft the story
  3. Revise the draft
  4. Create the story using story jumper
  5. Test on some kids and revise

Overall our project met/did not meet this criteria because when I read it to a little kid they really enjoyed it.

Te Reo, Term 4 2016.

This term we have been learning all about the Marae. We have learned that…….

  • The Marae is an important focal point for the community.
  • The Marae is a place where tradition and customs can be carried out.
  • The Marae is a place where people can express their values with dignity.
  • There are many kawa ( protocols) that prevail on the marae.
  • Marae kawa (protocols) can differ between maraes and iwi.

We have focused on some key concepts when doing this learning.
These are listed and explained in the table below.

Concept
Definition -
give the meaning of these concepts in your own words.
Tikanga
The way you do things at the marae
Pōwhiri
It's the welcoming ceremony
Tangata whenua
The local people that are connected to the marae
Manuhiri
Visitors at the marae
TÅ«rangawaewae
Home base on the marae
Whanaungatanga
Relationship
Manaakitanga
Caring for a elderly
Aroha
Love

See this video for an explanation of the roles and responsibilities of people on a marae.

Something I would like to learn more about the marae is…….. If I went to a marae how would they welcome the children.

Maths goal: Scales, timetables and charts to help me solve a range of different problems

WALT- I can apply relevant information from scales, timetables and charts to help me solve a range of different problems.

Modelling book
Maths goal

I found it quite easy once I had the hang of what I had to do. I found the last activity challenging because I had to match up different teams and sometimes they were together, then I had to start again and change when they played.

Apply simple linear proportions, including ordering fractions

I learnt how to compare ratios and I also learnt how to turn improper fractions into mixed numbers using division.
I found the relational task hard becasue finding simaliraties and differences in both stratergies.
Extended abstract

Turn improper fractions into mixed numbers by using division, like mixed numbers by using division like 47/7 to 6 5/7

Use numbers to compare ratios with proportions, like 2:5 or 3:4

Parliament

Parliament

This term we have been learning about Parliament. We have looked at the difference between government and parliament, NZ parliament, who is in government, how our government works and we compared democracy to dictatorship.

Three things that I learned are NZ parliament are:

  • Where all the people sit in parliament. E.g. John Key sits in the 4th seat.
  • What all of the roles are in parliament e.g. Sergeant at arms removes any members that are being overly rowdy.
  • Before a law became a law it was called a bill.

Here is the link to my compare and contrast map explaining the difference between democracy and dictatorship.

CARE: My progress so far

CARE: My progress so far

The CARE award that I am working towards is:  Silver

The one area of CARE that I am doing best in is: Community          because: I have 7 highlighted off and on the other values I only have 5

The one area of CARE that I need to work harder in is:   Active thinking and respect            because: they are the two that I have the least highlighted off in.

To show my leadership qualities I am a role model to others in the CARE values by doing/showing these leadership traits: I show the leadership traits resilience and integrity

On the CARE SOLO matrix below I am at this SOLO level:             because: I know how to use the values by myself and I could show other how to use them.

Prestructural

Unistructural

Multistructural

Relational

Extended Abstract
I am not aware of the CARE values yet.
I know what the CARE values mean.

I need help to use them.
I can use the CARE values.

I need reminding to use them.
I can use the CARE values independently.
I can use the CARE values independently.

I can role model to others how to use the CARE values.

Koru Games

The activity I did was Netball.
Two highlights were:

  • Coming 6th out of out of 32 teams because we had a lot of tough competition.
  • Winning to some of the teams by a lot because we worked hard all year.
I am proud of improving a lot because at the start of the year I wasn't the greatest and now I am a lot better.

Some advice on Koru Games for the next years year 7's is that try your best and if you don't make it into a team just move to another team and have fun.

I can apply my knowledge of adverbial clauses and connectives to see how ideas are linked in texts.

For reading I have been learning about adverbial clauses. I have found this learning easy because I kinda knew what it was but I needed a refresher.

In this activity Describe a adverbial clause , I had to describe what it was and then highlight what one was the adverbial clause.

My information report

The water cycle

The water cycle is a process that the water goes through between land, ocean and the atmosphere. The water is always recycled during the process; the water also changes state, it can change from a liquid to a solid or a gas. The can also change back. The stages of the water cycle are evaporation, condensation, precipitation, groundwater/runoff.

Evaporation
An important step in the water cycle is evaporation. Evaporation is when the sun heats up the water in the oceans, lakes and rivers and turns it into a gas which we know and water vapor(Gas).
Evaporation is faster when it’s hotter because the water heats up quicker therefore, it turns into vapor at a faster. Water vapor (Gas) is also known as humidity, in hotter places there is a high amount of humidity. After the water becomes a gas it goes up into the atmosphere and turns into clouds which is called condensation.

Condensation/Precipitation
Without condensation and precipitation the water cycle can’t happen because after the clouds form it rains which is called precipitation. All air contains water molecules which are invisible when condensation happens. Condensation also happens more when the temperature is hotter because warmer air contains more water vapor (Gas) than colder air does. After condensation happens precipitation happens. Precipitation is different types of liquids and solids. Eg:  rain, snow, sleet, hail and ice. The amount of precipitation that falls is very different around the world. Some places get precipitation all year round and other places have rainy and dry seasons. After the water vapor(Gas) mixes with dust in the air and turns into clouds and it rains, snows, sleets, hails and there is ice it then moves to the next stage of the water cycle which is runoff and groundwater.

Run-off/Ground-water
Without run-off and ground-water the water cycle won't start again. Run-off is just water running off the land surface. Runoff water reaches rivers, lakes and the ocean making the water cycle carry on. After runoff the water goes to a place called groundwater storage. It gets to this place by gravity. Ground water has many purposes like keeping plants alive and providing water to lakes.

Conclusion
The main point is that we need all of these steps to keep the water cycle going and so we have water and so do the plants, lakes, rivers and oceans.

The things highlighted in blue is when I added a hyphen and then ones highlighted in green is where I added a semi colon, commas and a Parenthesis.

I can recognise and understand a variety of grammatical constructions and some rhetorical patterns

I can recognise and understand a variety of grammatical constructions and some rhetorical patterns

In this unit I have been learning about:
  • The parts of speech.
  • The types of nouns.
  • The types of sentences.

In this unit, I found challenging… Learning about the different types of nouns because some of them I either have forgotten or I've never heard of them

Something new I learnt was... I learn that there are more than just common and proper nouns.

Technology on the bus must do #3

On the bus at technology I have been remembering to only talk to the person next to me. I was being self aware by only talking to the person next to me and staying in my seat. During the bus ride someone was trying to get my attention but I just ignored them because they were not next to me. The learner quality I showed was communication because when we got off the bus I asked the person what they wanted to talk to me about and next time tell me when we get off the bus. In the end I asked them what they wanted to talk to me about and they told me and we went to our class.

Junior dance #3

I have been remembering to turn up to junior dance on time every week.  I have been self aware because I have been turning up on time to my duty without being reminded. During my duty a junior came up to me wanting a hug but I said i couldn't because I was busy, but I said I will come and see them later on once I was finished doing what I had to do. The learner quality I showed was communication. I was supporting the juniors when they were struggling I helped them out. In the end the juniors got the dance and they said that they would practice at home. It felt good helping the juniors out when they were stuck. After I finished I went and saw the little girl that wanted a hug.

WALT: Use side or edge lengths to find the perimeters and areas of rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles and the volumes of cuboids.

These are my 3 answers:
Problem 1 = width 3 length 15
Problem 2 = width 4 length 20
Problem 3 = 3 bags

I understand the features of different types of texts and text forms.

  1. Text features are important because: They help make the poem, website, article and other genres more eye catching and more in depth.

  1. Each genre has different text features because: They are all different texts and every genre has different need. Eg: A website needs a eye catching design because it makes people want to buy stuff and in a poem the writer wants the person reading to be able to find a hidden message.

  1. Two genres that I studied the text features of are: Website      and     story.

These are my reading follow up task's:

My CARE Progress

I have done a check of my CARE progress so far this year.

I am proud of my progress I am doing okay
I think I am doing okay because I have quite a few values highlighted.

How far away are you from reaching your BRONZE/SILVER?
I am 8 boxes away from getting my bronze

The area of CARE that I need to try harder in C / A / R / E
I need to work on respect because that is the value that I have the least signed off in.

To achieve my BRONZE/SILVER award quicker I need to……….
Have a teacher conference to see if I have all of the right ticks recorded and then put those ticks in and then earn more ticks
The one thing that I can do to improve my progress in CARE is……
Work on the ticks I have left.
I will review CARE progress again at the end of the term.

Wednesday 6 July 2016

WALT apply the techniques of improvisation to a range of different scenarios.

Improvisation TECHNIQUES that I have used successfully are..... Always say yes. Thinking on the spot.

Improvisation TECHNIQUES that I would like to have more practice at…… Making it more spontaneous.

The thing that I enjoyed most about this unit was learning all of the new games because I have never heard of them before and they were really fun to play.

The thing that I found most challenging during this unit of learning was getting up in front of everyone because i'm not used to doing that kind of thing.

My favourite improvisation game was doorbell game because it was interesting on what everyone did.

My next step/ something I need to work on further  in improvisation is being more comfortable performing in front of an audience because I was a little bit shy.

Student Led Conference Reflection

The things I enjoyed most about my SLC were:
I enjoyed presenting my reading and maths slides because they were my most detailed ones but they were also the ones that I had to improve on. I also enjoyed showing Mum what we do in our class to pass some time.

What went well and why?
I think time wise it went well because Mr L came at the start and then I finished just before the bell rang to leave. I also think explaining my AsTTle went well because after I explained it Mum had no questions about it.

What were the challenges you faced when preparing and presenting your SLC?
I was challenged when I had to find evidence for my next step and also finding things to say in my writing slides.

What changes would you make for next time and why?
I would change my leadership slide a little bit because it wasn't as detailed enough as I wanted it to and also how I explained my arts and drama.

Task: WALT: Use appropriate scales, devices, and metric units for length, area, volume and capacity, weight

Oranges
Measuring is about making a comparison between what is being measured and a suitable measurement unit. Central to the development of measuring skills is lots of practical measuring experience. Also important is the reality that measurement is never exact.
Required Resource Materials:
  • Oranges
  • Measuring equipment including; rulers, scales, measuring jugs.
Activity: Complete the questions below:
  1. How can you measure an orange? (there will be multiple answers for this, list as many as you can think of). Weight,Length,Width,Capacity.Think of the attributes of an orange eg juice. Juice and inside
  2. Choose two of these attributes of an orange to measure and carry out the task. Write up a proposal for your investigation, including details on:
    • Attribute being measured
    Juice and inside
    • Equipment required
Knife, chopping board, cup and spoon
Method (step by step)
Cut orange
Squeeze the juice out of the orange  220 weight of insides  50 mls juice
Measure the juice
Peel out the inside of the orange
Measure the inside of the orange
How will you present your results?
    Google doc
    • Write up your results
  1. What were successful/unsuccessful approaches to measuring each of your chosen Attributes? Why? I think that squeezing all of the juice out of the orange was a bit of both as it made a mess but we got most of the juice in a container.
  2. With the inside of the orange I think it didn’t go very well because first using a spoon didn’t work but then we tried a knife and it kinda worked.   220 weight of insides  50 mls juice
  3. Choose 4 other objects to measure in the class - use 4 different measurements eg measure the length of something and the weight of something else. Write up your results in a table.  Pencil-length=17cm  book-width=20.5cm  scissors-weight compare with 4 highlighter= highlighter are just heavier  drink bottle- capacity= 760mls

My next step is to have a teacher conference and find a new goal

In Maths we have been learning to use a range of multiplicative strategies when operating with whole numbers.

The strategies we have been learning are:

- Estimate the reasonableness of large problems like 1 788 – 891. Could 497 be right?
- Use multiplication to solve addition and subtraction problems eg.
  64 – 48 = as (8 x 8) – (6 x 8) = 2 x 8= 16
- Use doubling / halving, trebling/ thirding and adjusting to solve multiplication problems,
 eg.  12 x 50 solved as 4 x 150= 600
- Use an algorithm to solve multiplication problems.
- Solve problems using simple cube numbers .
- Use an algorithm to solve division problems.

Here is a link to my Multiplicative Strategies Assessment which shows that I know why and how I use particular strategies. This doc also has screenshots to show which IXL activities I have completed as part of my learning.

My next step in my Maths Learning is…… long division
